Blog 8: July 26th 2025-Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Hey there! In the United States July 26th, it is considered National Disability Independence Day in celebrating the signing of the American Disability Act (ADA). If you have ever lived in the US, you have most likely heard about the ADA. It’s a policy that’s been around for 35 years, and it’s made a huge difference in the lives of millions of people. The ADA was initiated on July 26, 1990, and it’s meant to stop discrimination towards disabled individuals in employment, housing, transportation, and telecommunications. It’s been a game-changer for people with disabilities, and for years has been the strongest measure in the US to protect rights.
In fact according to the Census.gov, the ADA has been the most important law in protecting the rights of people with disabilities since it was signed into law. Additionally, in the year of 2023 44.7 million or 13.6% of non-institutionalized individuals had a disability.
To celebrate this anniversary, there are lots of events happening all over the country. The ADA National Network even has a free toolkit that can help local or national organizations, communities, and individuals find ways to support the ADA.
But it’s important to remember how the ADA policy might change in the future, especially when it comes to healthcare and civil rights. So, let’s keep an eye out for any updates and make sure that people with disabilities have the support they need.
